Get to know the nature and culture of Fukui Prefecture through sustainable experiences focused around the sea and tea
Tsuruga Tourism Association
In the spring of 2024, Tsuruga was connected to Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen, allowing more people to discover the city. The surrounding mountains and Sea of Japan have long sustained the people of Tsuruga, and through these experiences visitors can get to know the culinary culture and also give back to the community during their travels.
There are four experiences to choose from. You can try making oboro kombu, where kelp is brewed in vinegar and then shaved finely using a special knife. This process must be done by hand, and local artisans will teach you their trade.
Visitors who enjoy fishing can try to catch one of the prized red sea bream that thrive off the coast, using a more sustainable pole and line fishing method. Learn how to fillet the fish, then enjoy it grilled or as sashimi.
Chat with eco-conscious locals during a beach cleanup, then take part in an upcycling workshop to transform the plastic debris into something new and useful.
Alternatively, head to the Yojo workshop near Kehi Shrine to learn how to create an original tea blend, combining Japanese and Chinese herbs.
Multilingual pamphlets and written explanations are provided for each experience, and the fee includes carbon offsets of your choice.
